Yep, here it is. Obligatory E3 roundup, coming your way. From a JRPGer's perspective, here's the highlights (and lowlights), starting with the Big 3 (essentially- 2 since Nintendo was via Nintendo Direct):
1) Xbox/Microsoft conference:
Livestream: ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZCrimsonDragonOMFGLooksgoodhopeitgetsportedtoPS4ahhhhhZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZWitcher3ohniceIthoughtitwasDRMrestrictedwtf????ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZWHYYYYNothingregardingFable3/FableRemake???ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
Overall Impression: 1/10- terrible . Pretty much a slap in the face to gamers everywhere- didn't address most of the issues that we all had with the XBone at the reveal (Have to connect to internet every 24hrs, kinect pretty much watching your every move (potentially), etc)) Not to mention the price $500 ($100 more then PS4, bah).Nothing much to offer to the JRPGer in me. Super Fail.
2) Sony conference:
Livestream: *not sure what the big 20min wait was all about at the beginning- My thought: off to a greeeeeaaattt start*. And then. The awesome starts.
THE BOX REVEAL!!!! WOW- During the livestream, didn't really show up all that well (looked sort of VCR-ish like XBone); but checking into it after- much smaller and lighter, the rhombus/slanted look is actually kind of sweet and next gen looking; not to mention the Sony Eye camera >>>> Kinect, and PS4 controller added perks of touch pad etc. Hard drive is exchangeable. No region restrictions. No backwards compatible, but talk about Gaikai Cloud streaming. Social networking and integration. No restrictions on DRM. No need to connect to internet if you don't want (although PS+ required for multiplayer). Best: $399. Essentially: God I love you Sony.
FFX and X-2 HD remasters shown almost right off the bat (although I would have to say that the trailers posted on these games later were HORRIBLY SPOILERIFIC- badbadbadbadbad)
Rain- beautiful. Want.
Beyond: Two Souls- despite the fact that I was expecting more of the previous trailers which looked more Heavy Rain-esque as opposed to the action-y gameplay stuff we got, still excited for this game. Being able to transfer to your 'ghost' sidekick is just killer.
FFXV: *DIES*. The reason I am buying the PS4. 100% true. Glad it was rebranded from FFXIII and completely dissociated from it, since there seemed to be a disconnect between the two games essentially (didn't really tie in anymore). Gameplay looks f***ing fab. Beautiful. Amazing. Ridiculous. Awesome. Cannot get over this game.
KH3: Admittedly not a KH fan. but. wow.
Destiny: This game has turned me. I am NOT an MMO player. Let alone an FPS. But this game is just insta preorder. Cannot help it. The social aspects of this game just call to me, and the look, and the sci fi feel. Yep. WILL BE GETTING IT NO MATTER WHAT (edit: already preordered for PS4 at the time of this posting)
Overall impression: Freakin awesome 9.5/10. Sony, you've won. One two punch to Microsoft. Take my money. Preordered PS4 that night. Only thing that could've been better- more JRPG game reveals.
Sold.
Nintendo 'conference':
Livestream: .... stream was absolutely messed up. Took me 10mins to actually find a stable stream (UK one- go figure). ANYWAYS.
Pokemon XY: Fairy type pokemon, more gameplay footage, more pokemon. Cool. Already preordered so didn't really alter my opinion of the game, but reinforced my preorder. Something something about minigame to increase pokemon affection. hurrah I guess.
Bayonetta 2: Excited- like Bayonetta's new hair, excited to see if Jeanne is playable in multiplayer.
X- BEAUTIFUL. Might be my reason to get a Wii U, potentially, perhaps. The mech riding. Sequel(ish) to Xenoblade. Pretty much sold, although might hold off on a Wii U for a while and just get the game till I can afford the console itself.
Overall impression: ... wait it's over 5/10. That was a little boring. Really Nintendo? Only one new game announced and it was Donkey Kong? I mean, lots of stuff on the new Smash and Zelda (Windwaker and 2 for 3DS) etc etc. but yah. bored and disappointed.
3rd Party stuff and Indie games:
- Mirrors Edge 2: NICE. Totally expected that reveal but a little late in the conference; worried me for oh. about 2 seconds ;)
- Dragon Age 3: What the.... wow. Might just have convinced me to give it a shot.
- Tearaway: Yum. Finally utilizing Vita capabilities to max capacity!
- Transistor: Wow- like Bastion but looks even better to me. Impressed!
Favorite moment: Hand down, FFXV reveal trailer and subsequent gameplay trailer.
Least favorite moment: Overall, Microsoft conference. Pretty much disappointed me on almost every single level possible.
That's about it.... What were your favorite/least favorite aspects of the show?
