What's this? A balanced/fun version of Brawl?!?! I know what I'll be playing this weekend.
Hands On With Super Smash Bros. Brawl+
And you thought mods for Wii games weren't possible.
During the Melee days, Ganondorf was my main character. Any time serious matches needed to be played, there was no question which character I planned to pick. Much to my chagrin, with Brawl Ganondorf had been made borderline unplayable thanks to the ridiculously slow speed of all of his attacks and his hefty weight.
Being that each character in the mod was touted to be modified and balanced, as you might imagine he was the first character I chose in order to test the mod. It didn't take long to notice that Ganondorf moved faster, jumped quicker and higher, and more hastily executed nearly all of his moves as well.
Even though I wasn't manning my opposing computer character, it was clearly obvious that Squirtle had also seen some changes as he was moving faster than normal and had a greater downwards gravity.
Throughout my play session, I started to notice a number of other tweaks. Wolf (my Brawl main) felt a bit weaker in certain regards and certain moves seemed to send characters flying in a slightly altered direction. While this makes him a less effective character, the changes seem to make him a more balanced character.
I also noticed that players like Sonic, Metaknight, and Pit were far more capable of finishing their enemies. Anyone who has seriously tried to man Sonic knows that finishing the enemy at a reasonable damage level (~100%) was nearly impossible before.
I was able to Smash Bowser clear out of the field on the right-hand side with a well-timed over A smash.
Aside from an overall character balancing, the game removed the most aggravating of hazards from a number levels, making them more interesting to play. For instance, the WarioWare level no longer features all of the crazy mini-games. Certain levels, like the Hyrule Temple from Melee, have been replaced with a level from the Subspace Emissary. On a more negative note, custom levels seemed to be locked from usage in the game. While this may be a side effect of the mod, I hope they find a way to enable to the custom stages as some of my favorites in the game are ones made by myself and other players.
The character select screen, as mentioned earlier, has also been modified. Players will notice that transformation characters like Sheik, Zero Suit Samus, Squirtle, Charizard, and Venusaur are all selectable from the character select screen. This isn't a major change, but it does make selection of these secondary characters much more convenient.
