Hey, guys. I just posted a blog about this (read it here) but I thought I'd start a thread too for ease of discussion. I think the "game of the generation" for the Wii/360/PS3 is Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Feel free to agree, disagree, or whatever.

For me, it has to be Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, can't decide between both. It was just platforming perfection, everything in that game was incredible. The music was incredible, the levels were crazy and fun, the game was so colorful, and the game played and looked really good on the Wii. It basically said, you want a reason to buy a Wii? Well here it is. I know it worked for me and there's a really funny story about that.

I'd go with Mass Effect 2. The whole generation for me revolved around Bioware's sci-fy epic, and after 3 gaming's felt a little empty. No other series has quite given me that feeling. 2 I'd put on top for how it was set up as a space heist. I love heist stories and to see it all come together at the end was incredible.

Also Galaxy 2 kills 1. You know it to be true.

Personally thought Demons Souls was important.

I think that Modern Warfare probably had the most influence over the past generation.

I think that Galaxy is probably the BEST game of the generation.

As far as my favourtie game of the generation...  I have to come back to that.

Most influential game? I'd say Gears of War for turning everything into a cover based shooter.

I can't be objective about anything, so I'll leave it to experts to figure out that truth (it's probably CODMW, GTA4, Gears, Halo - again -, Super Mario Galaxy, or Uncharted anyway). For me, when I think of the generation just past, I think first of Xbox 360 and Crackdown. My favorite games are always ones I can play a ton of co-op in and Crackdown was really fun in that department. You had three large islands, plus the agency island, you and a friend could roam around in at will with no restrictions and cause all sorts of mayhem. You could even do the story missions if you wanted, but nah, I'd rather see how far I could jump a car using a ramp truck. Best sandbox game ever.

Good point. I definitely think you can make a good case for Gears of War.

At the same time, what about the influence of Wii Sports?  Without it we probably would not have had Sony and Microsoft pumping money into PS Move and Kinect.

Oh yea, thanks Nintendo for forcing Kinect and PS Move on us all. I think it's over now though, or at least fading away.

In terms of influence, Id have to say Angry Birds and the emergence of mobile gaming. I listened to a recent podcast where they mentioned that many hand held console devs abandoned 3DS and Vita for Android and iPhone which is just jarring to me. Understandable, but disappointing. Also, Dota 2, LoL and the emergence of eSports is also quite important this gen. 

@asrealasitgets: I keep seeing so many IPs that I like release their sequels only on iPhone: Plants vs. Zombies 2 and Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution 2, just to name two. It gets me annoyed, because I haven't upgraded my iPod Touch yet, and don't really want to because it still works fine. It's a second generation one and all the new games don't work on it. What kind of device goes obsolete in only a few years? I'm not getting an upgrade just to have it not play the new games a year later. Anyway, I wonder if iPhone games are going to make consoles and handhelds go out of business. This week's Wired Game/Life podcast (http://www.wired.com/2014/08/gamelife-podcast-episode-121/) talked about an article suggesting 3DS and Wii-U being already dead because of phones/tablets. Not sure I agree with that, but it scares me a little.

I'd go with Dark Souls...but Yarger already did.

So, to be a bit different....I'll go with Fallout 3.

Don't get me started on tablets. While I do own a glorious HD iPad with retina display, I don't enjoy it as a game console. Games that work the best are card games, but I can't imagine putting hundreds of hours into an RPG without a controller of some sort. While games like KOTOR and Final Fantasy Tactics, etc look great, I'd rather play them on a TV or handheld. 

As for the WiiU and 3DS is dead news, I'd have to agree. Many in the games media have been talking about this, and I kind of agree. Kids are growing up with iphones/ipads this gen, and unless they get the younglings into their brand, they will become irrelevant. Most of us Nintendo players are brand loyalists, despite having a lack of software, we keep buying their stuff because we grew up with their brand--and because we trust they make great software. So, because Nintendo makes money from hardware also, they need to make a lighter, thinner portable with a single screen like the VITA, or make their main software playable on console and portable like PSN, which Nintendo has said they are working on.
