Halo just went in too many bad directions as time went on:
a) Too much focus on vehicles and getting away from being about shooting.
b) Grenades were made weak to allow nade-jumping to get to spots.
c) They screwed with the melee system in Halo 3.
d) The weapons are like the microwave burriotos of guns in shooters today-- everything is generic, you get a burst fire rifle and a fully auto rifle, and you can't customize anything.
e) The developers have tried to force Spartan vs Spartan upon players rather than embracing the unique qualities of the elites or brutes (and giving them different types of vision/visors).
f) The series has not evolved or been made more immersive. It's become fan service for a limited audience and the brand has been milked to death with four entries and a remake on the 360.
g) Other franchises have moved shooting forward with more realistic running, immersive impacts, heartbeat in the rumble, iron sights aiming, ability to go prone, leaning around corners, using camera spikes to watch your own back.
