Hands On With Super Smash Bros. Brawl+

And you thought mods for Wii games weren't possible.

As we all know, Super Smash Bros. Brawl has been available for nearly two years at this point. Being the most popular entry into the series yet, there have been an unbelievable number of players experiencing the beefy offering.

Though it's an undeniably good game, for some people (like myself), something felt a bit off about it. As a huge fan of Melee, the decrease in speed and gravity was a bit of a turn off, and regardless of all of the balancing that went into the characters from Sakurai and his team, the game still had glaring flaws.

As the community often does with games they love, they tinker with them to try and make them even better. 3057Unfortunately for the Brawl community, large scale mods have more or less been exclusively available to PC gamers.

Thankfully, a crafty bunch of Wii hackers managed to create a code set that on-load, modifies a massive number of variables changing the Brawl experience greatly. They call this new experience, Brawl+.

Being that this mod requires access to the Homebrew Channel and the Gecko Loader to use, 3058it goes without saying that modding your Wii is necessary to take advantage of the game mod. Fortunately, no shady business is necessary as the mod requires you to use a legitimate copy of the game to play it.

Being the computer geek I am, I modded my Wii quite a while back. Thus installing the mod was no more work than adding a few files to my SD Card in strategic locations.

Booting up the game was simple with the Gecko Loader, requiring me to simply select "Launch From DVD." After simply seeing the character select screen, it was obvious that this mod had changed quite a bit from the standard Brawl experience.

What's this? A balanced/fun version of Brawl?!?! I know what I'll be playing this weekend.

Does the mod do anything with the net code, like improve it?

To my knowledge, no changes have been made to improve the online play. That's not to say there won't ever be, but I'm guessing it's unlikely as Brawl+ online players can not partake in a match with non-Brawl+ players (according to the site).

Gonna give this a shot! New SD cards are really cheap right now, and the new E3 announcements have me excited. Since the original Brawl was designed to be more accessable and casual than Melee, I can't really fault them for that. Plus, the wait for the new title is going to be hard to wait for. This might keep me occupied until then.
